Until I had my first child I wasn’t huge on Halloween, ok as a child I did love going trick o treating but I suspect that had less to do with dressing up and more to do with the free candy. You see I had no creativity, honestly I could never come up with cool costume ideas. Each year I’d hear my friends planning their costumes and weasel my way into being their sidekick somehow.
With the birth of our first daughter as October rolled around something happened, suddenly I was creative!! I fell in love with almost every baby costume I saw. I knew that she’d look adorable in anything but with out cold weather I decided on this adorable bunny costume.
I mean honestly isn’t that the cutest bunny EVER??
As the years have passed I’ve had to give up choosing our daughter’s costumes because apparently they now have opinions, instead I design a pumpkin or two to keep my creative juices flowing.
After that first Halloween something happened to me, I finally got into the true spirit and now I love it.
Each year we decorate the house, does end up looking like a mish-mosh of styles which I’m sure my neighbors adore…..I insist on decorating for the Autumn season with mums and corn while my girls are allowed to run rampant with the dollar store spider webs and hanging spiders.
Traditions are important and our family has developed some Halloween activities we do every year. Each member of the family gets to carve their own pumpkin and we display them outside for all of the kids on the street to enjoy. We also enjoy our Town’s Halloween festivities which take place the Saturday before Halloween. The local business association arranges this special day where the kids get to go trick or treating up and down the main street, running in costume from store to store, getting their faces painted and enjoying different activities.
The girls love this almost as much as Halloween night but there’s nothing like the big event which they wait all year for. The energy after school is always high on Halloween evening and as soon as it begins to get dark off they go! My husband walks the girl through the route the three of them plan while I shell out the treats.
This year I hope to be shelling out enough treats for my entire neighborhood thanks to the amazing contest Nestle has going right now!
