Growing up in a very small town is a unique experience. We were found running up and down the street playing happily while Mothers in houses along the way monitored our behaviours. At the end of our road was the BEST park in the world!!!
Ok it really wasn’t the best park in town (it didn’t have a spinning carousel) but it did have swings, a slide, monkey bars and if we were lucky we were given 25 cents to get a bag of chips at the Becker’s store nearby. This wee park which had wooden structures, squeaky swings and gravel to land on under the monkey bars hold so many happy memories for me.
It didn’t take much to please us as children, we needed space to run and equipment to explore and we were off, happily getting active without even realizing the benefits.
When I returned to my small town later in life I was surprised to find out that our Town had upgraded the park and the transformation was shocking! Our little park had become the BEST park ever!
Now this is a park I wish every child had in their neighbourhood! It was specifically designed to include all children’s capabilities. It has fully accessible equipment, with ramps and braille every child can play here. Oh and the splash pad is a total hit on the hot summer days. Wouldn’t you love a park like this nearby?
Kraft Celebration Tour
There is a way you could try to get your community a park like this. The Kraft Celebration Tour launched in 2009 has helped Canadians in 40 locations with $1 million dollars towards projects such as:
- Building a skateboard park
- Upgrading a sports field
- Improving a boxing facility
- Renovating a community youth centre
You can nominate your city or town for the chance to WIN $25,000 towards a community project that improves an existing space or to create a brand spanking new one. TSN is also involved; each winning community will host one of 10 live broadcasts between August 16th and 25th.
Nominate Your Town
To nominate your town you must write a short essay with up to 5 photos explaining why your project deserves to be a part of the Kraft Celebration Tour and how the $25,000 prize will be used.
Your essay can be submitted online at kraftcelebrationtour.ca or tourneedecelebrationkraft.ca until June 7.
TSN will announce the 20 finalists on June 30th and then Canadians will be given the opportunity to vote to decide the 10 winning Kraft Celebration Tour stops over the course of 10 days of online voting beginning July 8th.
If you’d like to keep up with the action on the Kraft Celebration Tour you can follow their Facebook Fan Page or by using the hashtag #KCT on Twitter.
