WIN a Samsung Galaxy S5 & Gear Fit from @Telus #FitNHealthy

Share Button

In January of this year I committed to Getting Healthy & Fit and tryly change my lifestyle to a healthy, active one and I’m now truly into the groove. Last month I talked about how Going to the Gym When You’re Out of Shape is SCARY and encourage everyone to overcome that hesitation and just do it.

This month I want to update you all, as my new Paleo eating lifestyle is a month old and my exercise has continued. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, I’ve had to learn what foods are processed and where sugars and “bad” fats are hidden. Essentially I’ve been eating whole foods, tons of veggies, proteins and fruits. Paleo isn’t for everyone but man oh man it’s working for me.

I have more energy, less migraines, less bloating and an over-all feeling of doing good for my body. I’ve also lost 19 pounds which tells me I’m doing something right.

I also upped my game at the gym, I’ve been attending my favourite class which combines Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi as usual but added in some cardio and weights each visit.

Telus sent me the Samsung Galaxy 5 and a Gear Fit to help me track my progress and I am super excited at my experience with it over the past 3 weeks.

The GALAXY S5 and Gear Fit help support healthier lifestyles

  • The GALAXY S5, with its enhanced S Health software and hardware, including a built-in heart rate sensor, is designed to be your personal fitness tracker, leading you through your fitness routines daily and consistently.
  • Set your goals and achieve them with the help of GALAXY S5’s pedometer and S Health’s constant tracking of your condition, walking distance, calories, speed, duration, and more.
  • To complete the package, the new, wearable Gear Fit connects to your GALAXY S5, providing  real-time updates on your condition, walking distance, calories, speed, duration and more.

For the first time I am seriously considering giving up my iPhone for an android. The apps I use regularly are user-friendly, the camera is FAR superior and the Samsung Galaxy S5 feels great in my hand. I plan on using it for the next month before truly making a decision but this is the closest I’ve come with any of the phones I’ve ever reviewed.

I could talk for ages about the Galaxy S5 itself but today I want to focus on the Gear Fit because it has impressed me and helped me tremendously with my goals so I’ll be brief with my 1st impressions.

Highlights of the Samsung Galaxy S5

Kick Ass Camera – This is the most amazing camera I’ve experienced on a phone. It features a 16MP camera which has the “World’s Fastest” Auto Focus at 0.3 seconds, HDR and more options than I can type.

High Speed Data – There’s no waiting for apps with this puppy, it features an innovative Wi-Fi technology for boosting data speed, Download Booster, which bonds Wi-Fi and TELUS’ 4G LTE Network simultaneously…which means it’s FAST.

Protection – The S5 has a dust and water resistant body which protects from short term immersion in water in dust. It also has Ultra-power Saving Mode which gives users up to 24 hours of battery life on only 10% of a charge….meaning that I won’t kill my battery unintentionally.

Samsung Galaxy Gear Fit Features

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is enhanced with S Health Software is a pedometer, heart rate monitor, food tracker and exercise log all in one.

Exercise Tracker

Gear Fit allows you to track your exercise and progress right on your arm. Simply choose the type of exercise you’re participating in and your goal and get moving. The only downside to this is that Yoga isn’t included but I used the pedometer for those classes.

Nutrition Tracker

Until today I’ve been using a food tracker which was located on my desktop, with the Gear Fit I can track my intake vs calories burned right from the phone! I hadn’t finished filling in my foods for yesterday so don’t worry about the low calories friends.

Pedometer

The pedometer tracks your steps through the day, allowing you to make a goal and watch it as your day goes on with a simple glance at your wrist. The app even awards you ribbons as you achieve your goals!

Heart Rate

Both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Gear Fit have built in heart rate monitors, for those of us intent on calorie burning this is essential during workouts.

Summary: Samsung Gear fit is perfect for my needs, it helps me track my overall progress and keeps an ongoing record so I can compare days and how far I’ve come.

It’s attractive and light on my arm, I wear it everywhere and don’t feel like it’s an obvious fitness device as it looks more like a high-tech watch. The Gear Fit offers instant notifications of emails, SMS, incoming calls, & 3rd party apps to keep you connected. It is also kitted out with 4G of space to upload your music, just connect wireless headphones and you’re all set.

For one thing I love Samsung I’ve never had a problem with any of their phones or other products, and the gear fit would sure help me with my food journal and walking steps, I’m sure with the gear fit and the visits to my doctors the two of them would be able to keep me on track, I like the gear fit because you are wearing it, so there is no excuse, unlike a journal that in my case works for a couple of days then gets thrown in a corner and forgotten about. Thanks for the wonderful review and thanks Julie for such a great giveaway and Telus for sponsoring such a great product!!!!

I won’t call myself plus size, however I’m not skinny either. I have an obsession with chocolate, so I prioritize myself to exercise, go for walks in the morning, and eating healthy lunches for at least 4 times a week; to balance out my chocolate intake. These two devices could really help me because they will allow me to take control over my craving for chocolate and provide me with proof of my progression. Exercise is really not my thing however eating healthy and a balance diet could help me achieve my goals; to lose 60 lbs and eat healthy. I would really appreciate these devices if won.

Hi Julie! After many, many Day 1’s and many months of sobriety in between, I relapsed once again. This time I have added something new to my tool box: health, nutrition, and exercise, along with a Naturopathic Doctor and coach. I know I shouldn’t make early sobriety complicated with too many demands, but this is working!!!! I’ve never felt better! I am eating low carb/high protein. I am taking supplements, doing yoga and walking. Similar to Paleo, you can understand the work involved calculating carbs, etc… Weight loss is a secondary goal. I am working hard to heal my gut from years of vodka abuse. It doesn’t matter how well I eat if I drink. The boozer’s gut doesn’t absorb the good stuff! I’m also working on a healthy liver. This means eating good fats. So yes, the S5 and Gear Fit would greatly reduce the *work* that is going into my *work* :-) Tracking exercise is a wonderful added bonus. This is an awesome give-away, Julie! Thanks for doing this!

Last year I had an set back and ended up being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and early Osteo Arthritis. I was unable to do much for almost a year, then got fitted with orthotic insoles, and switched to a more low impact regime, and got back at it! It’s a long road back, but slowly but surely, it is working. So important to keep moving, especially as you age! I would love to be able to track my progress. Thank you for the contest.

I have chronic health issues – arthritis (both RA and OA) and diabetes that require me to be proactive in terms of nutrition and exercise. The Gear Fit features — pedometer, heart rate monitor, food tracker and exercise log would encourage me to track my activities that would encourage me to keep as healthy and active as possible. The nutrition tracker is of particular benefit to diabetics. The Samsung S5 is an excellent device with useful health software that would help me to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

I keep looking for an app that helps me track my activity but everything I’ve tried so far needs me to manually input whatever I’ve done for activity which doesn’t work well for me. I want to get fit again because I used to love doing things like mountain climbing, hiking, playing tennis, biking, swimming etc. Now I have a harder time enjoying such things because I’m so out of shape. I am working on continuing to do those things so I can get better at them again.

As a 911 dispatcher, I work long 12 hour night shifts. It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever had, but also the most physically and mentally grueling job I’ve ever had. Working nights really mess up your body as a whole. I’ve gained almost 60 pounds since starting my career 9 years ago. At 32, I know I’ve got to get this weight off. My job graciously provided us with a tread mill. I’ve been walking on the tread mill during my lunch breaks, and taking my lunch to work, instead of eating fast food every night. It’s been slow going, but I’m feeling better day by day. I would love to win this giveaway! Good luck everyone. :)

These are all reasons why I want to start living better… but most of all…. This would really help with my overall health, I would be able to get a better understanding of what times of days I have the most energy and where I need to improve. My first focus would be improving my nutrition because I have a goal to be a better calorie counter and it would be way easy with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and gear fit from Telus.

I have a hard time staying motivated to exercise and eat healthy instead of quickly (I really hate cooking so I tend to grab whatever is convenient). This would definitely help keep me accountable and on track to getting healthier.

Even though I am older, I am quite good with technology because my son helps me out. The heart rate sensor would be great for me as I am getting older and need to monitor that, and this is actually the phone I have been looking into buying for myself but it is quite expensive. So thank you for the opportunity.

I would love to start tracking what I am doing now, and what I am eating, and then start setting some goals. I often feel like I’m in a catch-22 (have medical issues which mean I am in pain a lot of the time, and that makes it hard to exercise, but if I exercised more it would help with pain management).

I’d like to work on endurance (it’s sad how quickly I get tired) and strength (partially because muscle burns more calories than fat!). Improving on my eating habits probably wouldn’t hurt either, so hopefully the Nutrition Tracker helps me be more mindful of what I’m eating.
